Phone plan for family of 5- best deal? : Frugal
Cheap always comes with some strings. Sometimes it’s just a matter of accepting a new paradigm. Depending on your coverage, your use could cost as little as $50 (plus tax) for all five lines.
Google has a phone service called Google Fi. A line with them costs $20 plus $10 per gb of data used. Your 3gb use would add $30 to the $20 base.
Paradigm shift – you only set up one line of service. You request (free) 4 data only SIMs. There is no monthly charge for the data only SIMs. Data used on any of the 5 SIMs gets billed to the main line. Data is billed for exactly the amount actually used. If you use 3.4gb for the group, the data cost is $34. 2.2gb would be $22.
The main line would have “normal” service. The other four lines would use an “Over the Top” service such as Google Voice or TextNow. All five devices would be able to call and text over WiFi whenever available, saving mobile data cost.
Not for people who won’t stray from a comfort zone. It takes some research and some additional setup steps, but the savings can be substantial.
The four data only SIMs will use the T-Mobile network. The Google Fi line with an approved phone will use T-Mobile, Sprint and US Cellular where available.
Maybe post in the Project Fi subreddit if you want to hear more success stories. I did this with 2 lines for several months. Worked like a charm. Five lines would be just the same.
