Deciding which anesthesia for wisdom teeth removal? : Dentistry
I (23F) am getting 4 impacted wisdom teeth out in a month. I went for the consultation today, and after looking at my pano, my oral surgeon told me to get general anesthesia. (He also said I need another pano bc mines from Jan 2018, but my insurance won’t cover it) He also have me Clindamycin to take the day of. I expressed my concerns over GA, as I know it’s more dangerous than local, but he said it would be a difficult extraction and I wouldn’t want to go through that. He did say if I wanted local he would “try” which also concerned me.
I have severe health anxiety, and I’m terrified of general anesthesia. The thought of getting it makes me nauseous. I did what one should never do and googled anesthesia complications, and I saw they mostly happen the weeks after the surgery which terrifies me even more because what if I can’t get to a doctor in time or have brain damage. I also know if I do General I will be horribly health anxious weeks after the surgery, which also makes me want to get local to avoid that. I did have an op I needed general for about 5-6 years ago, and I didn’t have a reaction, but I also didn’t have this horrible anxiety.
On the other hand with local, I’m worried about them giving me too much and me having a reaction. The doctor said it’s 8 injections + nitrous oxide the whole procedure. Is it normal to be inhaling it the whole time???
Since I and google are not doctors, how does local anesthesia + nitrous oxide compare in terms of safety to general? And do I increase risks of complications during the surgery if I do one vs the other? I was also suggested to have an IV steroid administered. Is this normal? Will I be okay without it?
